Musician GOLDHEIST and visual artist James Needham come together to present REALM, a collaborative performance project exploring the spirit of place.

Combining their respective artist practices, Needham will paint landscape as inspired by the location whilst GOLDHEIST provides the soundtrack, fusing her narrative songs with electro-acoustic soundscape.  Simultaneously cursed and improvisational, this spatially motivated 1 hour performance will explore the spirit of place, and the different ways our surround can inspire and impact us.

SMITH AND JONES DEBUT ALBUM LAUNCH

Big sounds in a small town

Smith & Jones have a love for small towns, making Jayes Gallery at Molong the perfect location to debut their long awaited album ‘Dark Gives Way’ on Friday 17 March.  Hailing from Bathurst and Tamworth respectively, keyboard player and vocalist Abby Smith, met guitarist, harmonica player and vocalist Sophie Jones in a record store in 2013 where they bonded over a love of classic country and blues.

Though their small-town roots had similarities, their music upbringing couldn’t be more contrasting. Sophie Jones grew up on a blend of classic country and old school rock (think Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles) as well as Australian legends such as Kevin Bennett, who she saw play many time as a kid growing up in Tamworth. Soul music and jazz (as well as endless Joni Mitchel) were Abby’s very first influences as a child, and she can recall staying home from school to learn sing like Aretha or Nina.

Together, these influences have been the basis of Smith & Jones’s charm, and though their voices offer their own unique appeal when solo, it is together that they find their true expressive power. During their time together they have played countless gigs, supported Dragon and The Pigs at the Crooked Mountain Festival, played shows with the likes of Archie Roach, Kate Miller-Heidke, Tex Perkins & The Ape and The Black Sorrows with Vika & Linda Bull as part of Bathurst’s Inland Sea of Sound Festival.  

The past 12 months they have spent writing and developing a more mature and sensitive sound to when they started. This year sees Smith & Jones release their debut album, ‘Dark Gives Way’, recorded with Michael Carpenter at Love Hz in Sydney. Though their roots will always remain in the foundations of country music, their originals have found an undefinable energy of their own. Part classic country ballads, part sweet jazz standards, and often with a tongue firmly planted in their cheek, their beauty is in their harmonic simplicity and lyrical power.

This exhibition showcases the wide variety of our member’s styles and influences.

Each potter comes from a diverse background. They bring these experiences to their work, enabling them to challenge the bounds of the clay, to produce interesting original   Art Pieces, some incorporating found objects & multi media.

Parkes Pottery Group has been in existence for over 4o years. Presently there are 14 members at this time.

"Sorting through the experiences of any trip is to me like cruising for treasures to long for - or bring home - at a foreign antiques and bric-a-brac market. Some memories stay in my head and others are given a reincarnation. This collection of paintings is my keepsake from the adventure of cycling Umbria and hiking by Lake Como. By carrying my tin of pencils and ink for the journey and using the local water(s) to float my colours I created this take-home experience. My little paintings have their own life now and one of them may be the treasure you are looking for"

Artist Statement

"My previous exhibitions have concentrated mostly on painting but over the last few months I have been experimenting with printmaking and the art of collagraphs. Designing and creating the plates is a challenge, and not knowing how the various materials used to create texture will print is exciting. I began researching women from the ancient, mythological, and modern worlds from Egyptian history to 20^th century entertainers Queens, Empresses, Goddesses, and wonderful tribal women from various cultures.

This exhibition titled ‘ WINE, WOMEN, and SONG’ set my imagination on a pleasurable journey. My fascination of women from all genres, my love of birds, and the enjoyment of drinking wine created with such passion by many of our local wine makers all combined to culminate into what I hope is an interesting body of work to be enjoyed by the viewer as much as I have enjoyed creating it. Printmaking is often very experimental, and the unpredictable results can sometimes bring an exciting element of surprise, not always favorable, so it means alterations and reprinting to reach the desired result. "

Local musician Kellie O’Donnell says she is excited to be part of the ‘classic album’ phenomenon sweeping the Central West live music scene at the moment ahead of her performance of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ at Jayes Gallery on 19 February.

“There is an amazing buzz throughout the local scene at the moment, and hopefully It's a reflection of how much people are enjoying the classic album sessions,” Kellie said.

“It is so enjoyable to play these albums to listening audiences who appreciate live, stripped back versions of amazing music that has stood the test of time. “

While the concept of the classic album performance is not a new one, it is fresh to the Central West music scene and is growing in popularity.

Cowra wine bar ‘The Oxley’ began the sessions a year ago and the concept has now been embraced by venues in other towns.

Jayes Gallery Director Libby Oldham says she is excited to be presenting a roster of amazing local artists for ‘Classic Nights at Jayes’ right through to the end of the year and perhaps beyond. Their take on the winning formula also includes hand-made wood-fired pizza straight from the oven.

“Kellie performed Carole King’s Tapestry at Jayes last year and the atmosphere was magical ,” Libby said. “It was great to see everyone reliving their youth through the music, singing along one minute and quietly taking it all in the next.”

“Molong has really embraced the concept, so I’m advising everybody to book early, as we’re confident all of these sessions will sell out.”
